THE ROSES OF PIRBRIGHT

The ROSE family first appear in the Pirbright Parish Records in the early
1700s.
'Richard Rose born 1713
said to have been of Scottish origin, who had a small farm in
Pirbright............' (from the Rose family of Pirbright by George
Poulter, Part 1)
For many years Richard Rose sat in solitary state at the top of the family tree, until one day I found the following entry in the Chobham Parish records;
'Richard Rose born April 1713 son of Clement
Rose and Elizabeth'
Chobham being directly adjacent to Pirbright on the map of Surrey - it did seem likely that Clement
Rose of Chobham was Richard's father, the birth date of Richard being about
the right era and although I don't
have foolproof evidence that he was Richard's father several other people who are also
searching on the same line believe that he was, for one reason many of Richard's siblings names
seem to be carried on to the next generation.
The next step was to look for evidence of a marriage but I didn't find any details of a Clement Rose and Elizabeth
in the
Surrey Parish records and on first glance the Hampshire Parish records proved unhelpful. My partner - Andrew did 'accidentally' however find an allegation of an intended
marriage of Clement Rose and Elizabeth Read in the Farnborough Parish records,
the very place I grew up. It was the last place I had thought to look originally, as
all of the Rose's on my line had come so far from Surrey.
It was a little strange how we found this next record:
On looking at various records in Winchester Library and after thumbing through several volumes, Andrew was
browsing through the Hampshire Parish records when he accidentally dropped the book. When he picked
the book up
it had opened onto the page for Farnborough.... and there it was on the right
hand page;
Clemant Rose, of this Parish, & Elizabeth Read, of the tything of Haly and
parish of Yattley
were published in the Church of Farnborow, the 1st of October 1710, for the first time of asking,
and the second time of asking were forbid publickly by Robert Elson, of Cove, and the third time
of asking were forbid by John Courtness, Churchwarden, as not being a Parishioner.
It was extremely spooky and for a few moments I felt
shivers down my spine.....
were the ghosts of my ancestors in
the
room that day or was my imagination running overtime and I have been accused
of having an overactive imagination! It was a very strange,
if lucky coincidence, but brought more questions than answers. Did they
marry later? Did they marry in another Parish, or did they get
married at all, but at least we now knew what Elizabeth's surname was as it
wasn't stated in the Chobham Parish records.
Some time afterwards I looked at the Yately Parish records in Hampshire Records Office.
Unfortunately the original records had been reconstructed in later years from
the memories of the local parishioners so although no marriage of Clement and Elizabeth was found how could I be sure how much of the records were accurate.
Also the year I really wanted to look at, 1711, the records had been destroyed by fire! There was however a baptismal record for an Elizabeth Rose, but no parents were recorded.
There is however a clue in a Settlement Certificate dated 25 July 1711 for a Clement Rose, his wife and family stating that he was legally settled in Kingsclere in Hampshire and if he at any time became a charge on the Parish of Chobham Surrey they would be provided for by the Parish of Kingsclere.
So I then looked in the Kingsclere Parish records but although I found several ROSE families I did not come across any marriages of a Clement and Elizabeth Rose, although I did find the death of a Clement Rose at Echinswell/Sydmonton dated
1769/1700.
Therefore the trail now seems to be heading into Hampshire on which a new book is opening in the search for these (possible) ancestors and so I continue with this, time-consuming all addictive work............
